Nevvar Salih İşgören Vakfı 2015 - 2017 / Reflected from the media - 1 MILLION TL SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHILDREN OF MARTYRS

PRESS RELEASE
1 MILLION TL SCHOLARSHIP FOR CHILDREN OF MARTYRS
While the Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation continues to increase its contributions to education, healthcare, and social projects in İzmir, it is launching its nationwide aid initiatives by supporting the children of our martyred soldiers. Founded by the late philanthropic businessman Salih İşgören in 2010 shortly before his passing and named after himself and his wife, the Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation has proven to be the pride of İzmir through its charitable works dedicated to the public.
Erol Urgun, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated, "We have brought very important works to İzmir. But there is no stopping. We will undertake many more major projects to keep the names of our benefactors alive forever." Emphasizing that taking care of all orphans is the responsibility of the entire society, Urgun continued as follows: "Last year, during Ramadan and Eid al-Adha, we provided holiday and educational clothing assistance to a total of 2,256 children in cooperation with District Governorates, the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office Probation Directorate, the Community Supported Policing Branch Directorate, local governments, the AK Party Women's Branches, and various non-governmental organizations. This year, during Ramadan, we doubled our support. Within the scope of the protocol we signed with our Governor of İzmir, Mr. Erol Ayyıldız, we delivered pre-holiday aid to 2,000 orphaned and underprivileged children through 17 District Governorates. We have not forgotten the children of our martyrs either. We have always stood by them, and we will continue to do so. The Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation will provide 1,000,000 TL in educational aid to fulfill its responsibility toward our soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect our homeland and to lead the way for other sensitive NGOs. Previously, we carried out a similar initiative within the scope of İzmir for the children of martyred police officers. We have started working to expand this support nationwide. During his lifetime, our late founder Salih İşgören donated an office apartment for the use of the Martyrs' Families Association, a commercial property in Kordon to the Mehmetçik Foundation, and both a commercial property in Kordon and a large villa in İnciraltı to the Turkish Armed Forces Foundation. As the foundation, we opened an intensive care unit in Gaziemir last year, named after the martyred Opr. Dr. Kamil Furtun. In April, in cooperation with the Provincial Mufti's Office, we organized Mawlid and Quran recitations for our martyrs in four districts of İzmir, distributed lokma, and presented books to the attendees. In the coming period, we will seek permission from their families to name one of the student dormitories we will build in Buca and Çiğli after Martyred Prosecutor M. Selim Kiraz, and the other after Martyred Lieutenant Abdülselam Özatak. We aim to build a martyrs' monument where we can see the names of all military, police, and civilian martyrs of İzmir, as well as an İzmir Martyrs' Museum where their life stories will be immortalized. No matter what we do, we can never repay our debt of gratitude to our martyrs."
Stating that the commission, formed under the chairmanship of Ahmet Kartal—a Member of the Foundation's Board of Trustees who previously served as the Head of the Inspection Board of the General Directorate of Foundations and a Member of the Foundations Council—is working on the necessary amendments to the Foundation Deed regarding the upcoming activities of the Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation, Urgun continued: "When looking at what we have done in the last year—six months of which were spent waiting for the audit report prepared by two Chief Inspectors and four experts from the General Directorate of Foundations to guide us, though it was good to see that things were done correctly—I believe we can achieve many more beautiful and beneficial projects with the support of our public institutions and the public. In our planning, we have very good projects to be carried out in cooperation with the Prime Ministry, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Interior, Ministry of National Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Family and Social Policies, our universities, local governments, and press organizations. We will provide information about these in the coming days at a chat meeting that we plan to hold with respected members of the press, which we intend to continue periodically in the form of an exchange of views. In the cooperation and work we will carry out with press organizations, our Deputy Chairman of the Board Nurettin Memur and our General Coordinator Berna Şahin will contribute greatly to us as individuals from within the sector, with both their professional experience and academic backgrounds. To work in compliance with laws and regulations, very valuable work is being done by Ahmet Kartal, who forms our Audit Board and whom I can describe as the most experienced foundation expert; Retired Gendarmerie Colonel Ünal Ödemiş, who has held very important administrative positions in the Armed Forces; Mülayim Altınkalp, who served as our benefactor's financial advisor for 30 years; and our legal advisors Atty. Maksut Karaosman and Atty. Sezer Ayyıldız. I would like to thank all our board of trustees members, esteemed executives of public institutions, and press organizations who support our work."
Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation Chairman of the Board Erol Urgun stated that when they consider what the late benefactors Salih İşgören and his wife Nevvar İşgören brought to İzmir during their lifetimes, they find it difficult to even come close to matching their contributions. Urgun spoke as follows:
"As a foundation, a flag has been handed over to us. Our duty is to carry this flag as far forward as we can. During our benefactor's lifetime, he had a verbal will directed at us, saying, 'Whatever charity you do, act in coordination with the governor's office.' Without compromising on the will of our esteemed benefactor, we always inform the Governor of İzmir of the period regarding all charities performed and obtain his approval. Our protocols and work with our previous governors, Mr. Cahit Kıraç and Mr. Mustafa Toprak, are beautiful examples of this. We signed our first protocol with our current governor, Mr. Erol Ayyıldız, before this Ramadan for clothing aid to 2,000 orphaned children, and hopefully, our joint work will continue in even better projects. We will submit a progress report to him, just as we did for our previous governors. As the Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation, we are aware that we have undertaken a very important mission in İzmir. Because no matter which point of the city you go to, it is definitely possible to see the names of our benefactors. Conscious of this responsibility, we believe we have signed off on significant works. However, there is no stopping. We have very important projects for our İzmir. We believe we will bring them to life in a short time."
CHARITIES PERFORMED BY THE FOUNDATION TO DATE
The first work undertaken by the Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation after its establishment was to meet the internal equipment needs and to realize the 100-meter Tube Passage Project connecting with the adult hospital of the 10,000-square-meter indoor area Dokuz Eylül University Nevvar Salih İşgören Children's Hospital, which was built by benefactor Salih İşgören during his lifetime and inaugurated by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during his prime ministry in 2012. This was followed by the construction of the Gaziemir Nevvar Salih İşgören State Hospital and its parking lot, which has 9,500 square meters of indoor area and 7,500 square meters of outdoor area, opened by Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım when he left the Ministry of Transport and was a candidate for Mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. In order for this hospital to open on time, after the Nevvar Salih İşgören Foundation fulfilled its commitments in the main protocol, it signed 4 additional protocols with the İzmir Governorate at points where public institutions and municipalities were squeezed in terms of time and budget, ensuring that the hospital opened fully equipped. Meanwhile, the exterior renovation and interior painting needs of one hospital, eight schools, and two clinics built by the benefactors were met. In addition to the student scholarships given every year, the education at the schools bearing the names of the benefactors was supported.
While the late Salih İşgören contributed significantly to İzmir, the foundation carrying his name actively collaborates with numerous public institutions and NGOs to support education, healthcare, and social welfare, providing scholarships and aiding institutional infrastructure yearly. Key collaborative efforts and commitments include:
Partnering with security, judicial, and educational bodies for student scholarships and material support, such as aiding police families, probationers, and university students.
Undertaking and delivering specific medical and emergency infrastructure projects for the Gaziemir Nevvar Salih İşgören State Hospital.
Funding and supporting major regional facilities and academic events, including the İzmir Biomedicine and Genome Center, stem cell treatment contributions, and scientific symposia.
Advancing plans for dedicated facilities like communication training centers and student residences named after notable figures.
